Lake Austin's planned fall 2026 drawdown was canceled. The City announced the decision on September 24, and LCRA's current lake-lowerings page confirms it. The old October 12-November 30 schedule is not a reason to cancel a November boat outing.

What changed?
The August announcement proposed lowering Lake Austin for shoreline maintenance. After further coordination and community discussions, Austin decided not to proceed. The City cited concerns about impacts on waterfront businesses, recreation and major fall activities.
The proposed ramp closures, Emma Long swimming restriction and late-November refill timetable belonged to that canceled plan. They should not be presented as current drawdown restrictions. This does not establish that every ramp, park or rental is available today: unrelated maintenance, weather and operator schedules still need checking.
What this means for boat rentals
Do not assume a rental is unavailable because an older search result still describes the drawdown. Equally, an available-looking calendar does not answer every arrival question. Before paying, get confirmation for your exact date and departure point.
- Confirm the lake and launch: ask for the marina or dock name and the operator's arrival pin. A Lake Austin trip and a Lake Travis trip can have very different drive times.
- Check the full price: ask whether captain charges, fuel, taxes, gratuities and parking are included. Compare the total for your party, not an hourly teaser against a whole-trip price.
- Ask about changes: confirm the weather cancellation policy, refund or rescheduling options, and how you will be notified if the meeting point changes.
- Plan the group: confirm capacity, boarding accessibility, children's requirements and any food or drink restrictions directly with the operator.

Public access, parking and directions
Use the actual departure instructions supplied with your reservation. A public ramp is not automatically your rental's pickup point, and a map pin does not reserve a parking space. Ask about parking fees, trailer parking if relevant, check-in time and the walk to the dock.
For an independent lake visit, our Lake Austin public-access guide includes maps and access-point comparisons. Cross-check your chosen location with the official TPWD access directory and the park or ramp operator before traveling. Do not use the canceled drawdown announcement as today's access report.
Flood readiness is a separate issue
LCRA's October 29 update warned that heavy rain could lead to rapid flood operations when the Highland Lakes have limited room for additional water. That is a readiness warning, not a statement that Lake Austin rentals are closed.
For a trip-day decision, use the timestamped LCRA flood-status page and River Operations Report, then confirm with your captain. Conditions can change after a guide is published. Read the October 29 background update.
Does this apply to Lake Travis or Lake LBJ?
The canceled proposal concerned Lake Austin. Do not transfer its old closure dates to another lake. LCRA's current notice says it does not plan to lower the pass-through lakes in 2026; that is not a promise of constant water levels or unrestricted access. Each outing still needs its own weather, launch and operator check.
Make a backup plan without giving up the day
If your operator advises against going out, choose an indoor activity rather than trying a different launch on your own. Our Austin experience comparison covers museums, indoor skydiving and other options. For dated plans, see things to do in Austin in November.
