Urban Echo Writers Workshop

Welcome to Urban Echo, a print and online newspaper inspired by the unsung, unhoused heroes of Austin. Infamously known as Bat City, Austin's bats and humans coexist beneath downtown bridges. As Denver Gonzales says, "To understand the health of our ecosystem, we must listen to The Urban Echo." Like bats using echolocation to navigate, Urban Echo amplifies the diverse voices and powerful stories that shape our city. The Urban Echo Writers Workshop gathers weekly at the Austin Central Public Library to provide community members an engaging space to learn journalism skills, interview local artists, and contribute their own voices through storytelling. Participants will gain practical experience with newspaper layout, editing, and receive supportive feedback on drafts. Each session includes group readings and collaborative editing to foster an inclusive community dedicated to authentic storytelling and community action. Urban Echo Magazine features contributions from ten artists per edition, including interviews, essays, poetry, prose, and street photography. We believe in conversation over cancel culture and prioritize topics such as: Stories of survival and mental health. The resilience required to persist through life's challenges. How prisons and hospitals intersect with the lives of the unhoused. Addressing the complexities and ethical concerns surrounding homelessness. Rehumanizing individuals who have been unfairly stereotyped. Urban Echo also supports initiatives such as Draw Together art classes at homeless encampments and Artists in Residency programs at ESB-MACC, Carver Museum, and Dougherty Arts Center.
