Origin Stories at Esquina Tango

Cellist and violinist Philip and Hirono Borter of Duo-B are coming back to Beerthoven and they've "ginned" up a program you won't want to miss! Origin Stories traces the development of various classic genres from Polish mazurkas through Brazilian choro, all the way to works by Villa-Lobos and Duo-B's own original compositions. The program also reimagines the music of J.S. Bach in a modern context, reflecting on how foundational ideas continue to inspire new generations of composers and performers. Thanks to our sponsors, we will also be serving warm pastries, cold beer, and hand foraged gins generously provided by Easy Tiger, Lazarus Brewing, and Wild Gins, as well as wine and non-alcoholic beverages--all at no additional cost! This performance will take place at Esquina Tango, an East Austin Latin cultural center. Since its founding in 2006 and the renovation of an old church into a dance studio in one of Austin's most diverse neighborhoods, Esquina Tango has provided the Austin community with over 5,000 classes and more than 240 cultural events and hopes to continue to positively change peoples’ lives through dance and culture. About Beerthoven: The critically-acclaimed Beerthoven Concert Series is a down-to-earth, approachable celebration of classical song, chamber music, and beer; a quirky mixture of Bach and Doppelbock in unique and intimate settings. Beerthoven finds its inspiration in the musical and festive events of the Austin Saengerrunde as well as the private "salon" concerts of Beethoven's time. Beerthoven events feature live classical music, free beer, and other refreshments and snacks in an all-inclusive manner. There is no backstage here; audience members may even find themselves standing in line for beer with the performers. Programming is intentionally diverse in tone, instrumentation, and featured performers. Beerthoven supports local artists by offering fair compensation and unique performance venues. Audience members will find our prices at the very low end of typical classical concerts--especially for students and especially given the high quality of the exbeerience.
